question marks

When ideas and businesses are born, the world seems like an endless realm of possibilities, opportunities and chance. Sure, when you started your business, you knew it would be tough. But, give it enough time and hard work, and you knew that it would turn into something great. And, the only thing limiting your business was you.

But, as time has gone on, you have entered the daily grind. What had once energized you is routine, bordering on burden. Now, you’re paying bills, training employees and developing a core set of customers. Those possibilities that had once fueled your company have become diluted by the job.

This is where branding comes in. It’s a concept that comes into contact with what is “next.” The fundamental mindset that was present at the beginning of your entrepreneurial journey. You take a break from working in your business and begin to view it more holistically and within a broader context. When you lay out your business, and begin to see what you’ve built, and all its nuances, you have taken a serious step into a new reality for your company.

What makes this step so powerful? The answer is perspective. When your business began, you viewed it within a world without preconditions. But, as you’ve worked in your business, you hit walls, were hit with challenges and probably have been burned a few times. Each of these experiences creates constraints, forcing you to modify your behavior and try again; this time with a new perspective.

While learning from mistakes is a good thing and we always want to make sure we’re making the best decisions, the fundamental aspect of reaching the next stage in your business’ growth requires you to take a step back and gain a new perspective. These new perspectives, whether it’s your customers, services and/or operations, force you to consider new possibilities, configurations and futures.

If you feel like you’re stuck, try to step back and look at your company in a new way. Understand that you, for better or worse, might have a constrained perspective. Then, reignite that entrepreneurial passion by asking yourself “What if we did…” Nothing is off limits here. You are, effectively, starting over and replacing the “job” with the same entrepreneurial drive that got everything started. Pretty soon, gears will kick in and you’ll be building, reaching and planning your way to what is next.
